If you’ve recently been experiencing a toothache or tooth sensitivity, there’s a chance you may need root canal treatment. Other common symptoms may include receding or swollen gums, temperature sensitivity, and discolored or darkened teeth. However, some patients have reported experiencing no symptoms until the condition became advanced, so you may be in need of a root canal and not know it.
Luckily, Kids First Dental can help! We are proud to offer root canals in Columbia for our patients suffering from an infected, damaged, or decayed tooth.
Are you wondering if you need a root canal treatment? If so, keep reading to learn more about what to expect from the procedure.
Prior to your root canal treatment, Kids First Dental will take x-rays of your affected tooth and its root to determine whether a root canal is actually the best course of action.
If it’s determined that root canal treatment is necessary, a local anesthetic may be applied to the area if there is still feeling in your affected tooth.
During the procedure, a tiny hole will be drilled into your affected tooth to access the root and pulp. The pulp of the tooth contains nerves, blood vessels and other materials which may need to be removed depending upon the severity of your issue. Once the tooth root canal has been completely cleaned and disinfected, the tooth is filled with material to prevent future complications.
Following root canal treatment, we do recommend a dental crown being placed. A dental crown can provide additional structural support, strength, and protection for the affected tooth, which will prevent additional complications later in life.
If you think you may have a pulp infection or severe tooth decay, it’s recommended that you not wait to seek treatment since doing so can lead to more problems and further pain.
